Philippines' Multimedia Industry

The Multimedia Industry in the Philippines can be described as something booming really fast in an unprecedented manner. Despite the unfortunateness of fate in history, the Philippines is now catching up when it comes to technology matters especially in the multimedia industry.

"Multimedia is the use of variety of artistic or communicative media."

INTERNET and WEBSITES

Filipinos can be very fond of having introduced to a new and foreign technology. Using technological gadgets they can easily access the internet and browse photo sharing websites, news and business websites, informational/educational websites, blog sites and the ever popular social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and a lot more. More and more Filipinos are using Facebook in a daily basis and update their twitter and instagram as well. Even actors, actresses, news anchors, TV hosts, singers, comedians and even the Pope has twitter accounts.

This just proves that multimedia industry is now dominating not only the Philippines but the whole world.

In fact, in a statistical finding, in the year 2003, 63.1% of households in the Philippines have television in their home while in the year 1990 there is only around 23% television receivers. In 13 years, 40 % of the population was introduced to television.

TELEVISIONS and RADIOS

ABS-CBN, GMA Network, TV5 and Radio Mindanao Network (RMN) are just a few of the most powerful TV and radio networks with massive audiences. They are all accessible in most of the regions in the Philippines which means. As television dominates the multimedia industry, radio users lessen but it didn't continually disappear because of the increase of mobile users that have easy access with radio stations just with the use of earphones.

Because of the continuous emerging of multimedia in the country, the Union of Journalists of the Philippines - UP, an academic socio-political organization of students based in the College of Mass Communication, is conducting a yearly media report to apprise the current situation on the Philippine Media. Last year's event title is "Media Report 2013: Assessment of the Philippine Media Industry".

MOBILE PHONES

Paul Levinson stated in his book, "Cellphone", the mobility and portability of media is called "the media-in-motion business". Moreover, cellphone is a gadget portable enough to be brought anywhere and can be used in a different variety of media like voice recording, picture taking, video capturing and even video and photo editing. According to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), 92% of the Philippines population (per 100 people) in 2011 has active mobile phone lines. More mobile phones, more multimedia more connections to the world.

All of these mean that Philippines has evolved fast in the multimedia industry which also means the demands for human resource with adequate skills and knowledge about the whats and the hows in terms of multimedia is now in demand. As a multimedia arts student studying in a premiere school in Laguna, I believe I’m in quite good position if it concerns my future. I also believe that having multimedia in our daily lives opens a lot of opportunities to connect to the whole world in the least effort. And the more we connect the more we hope to change the society we live in for the better.
